Women's Health

Did you know that your period is a report card of your health and fertility? A woman’s period should come and go with relative ease, not disrupting her daily routine or quality of life.
Ovulation is a key sign of balanced hormones as it produces progesterone – an essential hormone for fertility. Progesterone also boosts metabolism and supports healthy weight management, reduces pain during periods, fluid retention & inflammation, increases detoxification, supports bone health, reduces risk of oestrogen-dominant cancers and male hormones, thereby improving skin and hair. It calms and relaxes us, improving sleep and mood.

Symptoms indicating imbalance to female hormones
  • Mood fluctuations
  • Food cravings
  • Fluid retention
  • Sore, swollen and tender breasts
  • Heavy bleeding during periods (over 80ml/day) and bleeding through sanitary items into clothes
  • Painful periods requiring pain medication/days off work
  • Little to no bleeding during a period
  • Anovulatory cycles (no ovulation takes place)
  • Dark brown spotting or bleeding in between periods
  • Issues losing weight no matter how well you eat or how much you exercise
  • Facial hair growth
  • Persistent acne
  • Infertility

Stress & Lifestyle Management

Most of us experience some form of stress on a daily basis.

Short term stress is a normal response, for example, doing a workout at the gym, sitting an exam or presenting a seminar. This response produces hormones that improve mood, weight management, vitality, libido, mental focus and concentration and sleep.

Prolonged, chronic stress is more prevalent today. A range of factors like working long hours, financial pressures, poor nutrition and lifestyle habits, home environment, over-training and recurring ill-health can lead to:

  • Gastrointestinal inflammation
  • Insulin resistance
  • Diabetes
  • Anxiety and insomnia
  • Altered menstrual health
  • Low libido
  • Brain fog
  • Low mood
  • Suppressed immunity and
  • Risk of cancer

Gastrointestinal Health

The gastrointestinal system is our key ally to good health and prevention of future disease.
Good nutrition is essential to supporting the gut as it can be easily disrupted by poor lifestyle habits, impaired sleep, chronic stress, environmental factors (Eg. Exposure to toxic chemicals, pesticides), inflammatory food and drink, and underlying infection or disease.

Symptoms which may indicate poor gastrointestinal health and/or disease
  • Abdominal bloating, distension and pain
  • Excessive and/or uncontrollable flatulence
  • Regular diarrhoea/constipation
  • Food intolerances and allergies
  • Undigested food in stool, blood in stool
  • Brain fog, fatigue, poor mood

Pain & Inflammation

In normal circumstances inflammation is a good thing. It’s our first line of defence and is needed during a trauma Eg. A scrape or cut causes blood to enter the area and remove any infectious agents and deliver nutrients to begin repair.
However, prolonged inflammation can cause recurrent swelling and pain, and in severe cases becomes systemic – affecting other parts of the body, reducing our immunity, and leaving us vulnerable to infections and autoimmune disease.

Symptoms and conditions indicating chronic inflammation

  • Redness, swelling, tenderness, reduced range of motion and pain
  • Suppressed immunity Eg. Recurrent infections, colds, flus
  • Autoimmune conditions Eg. Rheumatoid arthritis, Endometriosis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Hashimoto’s, Coeliac Disease
  • Gastrointestinal issues including: bloating, distension, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, reflux, stomach pain
  • Blood sugar fluctuations and weight gain
  • Mood disturbance Eg. Anxiety and depression
  • Poor sleep

Allergies & Intolerances

Allergies
An allergy is a response by the immune system, causing a physical response like airway tightening, hives, vomiting and swelling. Severe cases such as airway tightening are anaphylactic reactions that cannot be treated Naturopathically and require immediate medical intervention.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies you may experience itchy skin, watery eyes, sinus congestion, headaches, brain fog, fatigue and regular sneezing. Commonly, over the counter anti-histamines are used to suppress histamine, but all too often once the anti-histamine wears off, the symptoms come back worse than before.

Digestive intolerance
Intolerances are less severe than allergies, however they can still compromise quality of life.
Intolerances are a result of a dysfunctional gut-immune interface, and can be worsened by the ingestion of chemicals and artificial additives, inadequate digestive enzymes, and consuming foods that cause flatulence, abdominal pain, bloating, distension, cramping, nausea, diarrhoea and constipation. These symptoms can be a by-product of underlying disease such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
